Jerome Wright
|
Originally
from Virginia, and raised in Washington DC, Wright has led a remarkable
life first as a Classical cellist playing with orchestras in Brazil and
all over the world, and now after his retirement from the US Army, he
has dedicated himself to painting.
He works
with his fingers in
oil paint and oil pastel, generally on panel or
canvas, creating glazes of
varnish over each new layer of work, a process which builds up
surfaces of great richness. The pictures are drawn from Wright's colorful
life as classical musician, theater goer and jazz music lover - and from his
interest in things spiritual, where he attempts to create his synthesis of religious imagery.
The paintings in this slideshow represent the artist's recent work. The images are often
very large and are difficult to photograph because of their shiny
surfaces, so if possible you should see the paintings for yourself.
A signed book of earlier work and photographic reproductions suitable for framing are
available by contacting the Arts Council.
